What is an ingrown hair, and why does it occur?

An ingrown hair occurs when a hair curls back into the skin instead of growing straight out. This phenomenon often happens due to improper shaving techniques, such as shaving too closely or against the direction of hair growth, which can cause the hair to become trapped beneath the skin surface. Additionally, blockage of the hair follicle, often caused by dead skin cells or other debris, can exacerbate the problem, preventing the hair from emerging properly. This condition can lead to irritation, inflammation, and sometimes infection as the body reacts to the hair that is effectively ‘stuck’ in the skin.
